Ah, you know. People assume that because of his seemingly daredevil-may-care attitude ("the face I put on") and the fact that he did things like stop training to play baseball (seen only in the anime, but it was Toriyama's idea) and not stay behind with Tenshinhan and Chaozu to train further with King Kai(o), that somehow makes him a slacker. It's unfair, because when he did train, he trained as hard as he could. He just didn't dedicate his life to training and fighting like some of the others did. I guess some folks confuse him with Yajirobe, one of the true master slackers of Dragon Ball :-P (although he's a bit undervalued too, as he's a master swordsman).

I liken it a bit to what I call the "Krillin Effect." Toriyama for many years positioned Krillin as a close second to Goku, and even when Goku surpassed him, Krillin still managed to surprise in battle with his craftiness (he surprised Frieza quite a few times, for example). Yet the filler material-- ESPECIALLY the movies-- kept portraying Krillin as significantly less competent than he usually is in the name of comic relief. So a lot of fans see Krillin as a joke. I suspect that sadly a lot of people judge him for his height, as well...

I think you make some valid points. It's hard to figure out exactly what a person was doing off camera and for how long. I think Yamcha's 2 great loves are martial arts and the idea of marriage and he flip-flopped between chasing the two. His relationship with Bulma never seemed to stick very long, so he had lots of time in between to train. From what I can tell, the longest they were ever together was the first year.

I never really thought Yamcha played pro baseball for very long. His jobs seemed to revolve around his relationship with Bulma as far as I could tell. Most of the time, he seemed to be training, but when he wanted to cultivate a relationship, he seemed to work to pay for dates and such (hard to impress the richest girl in the world.) It's like he went back and forth between kung fu hobo and metro boyfriend.

He doesn’t have a daredevil like personality

It doesn’t make him a slacker and he doesn’t have a Daredevil May care attitude. It doesn’t make him a slacker

Thank you ,a really nice chapter, can't wait for the conclusion in the next chapter..!!!

Well as for Yamcha, even though they make jokes about him, i thing people really like him, sure they make fun of him for all the times he was beaten by stronger villains, but he is one of the ''Original'' Dragonball characters!!! The problem is that Toei is taking account (maybe) of all those memes and funny videos about him , so they make him more of a joke character in Super (even go so far to mention the ''death pose'') But everyone keeps forgeting that Yamcha i still one of the Strongest ppl on Earth. (If they not retcone it he is far stronger than Master Roshi)
I wish they will show him fighting again in the Anime...His last fight is back in a filler episode of the Buu Saga...(many years ago) !!!

Many dislike Yamcha. There are most like me who respect and like Yamcha. He’s underrated to the extreme point where I wish Toriyama gave humans power boosts

Thanks for taking the time and drawing these wonders, I love the Yamcha character and I always thought I was not well rated. My favorite character, and this story you created is spectacular.
Thank you!

Thank you for understanding and being patient. And thank you for always being supportive.
Yalashanda 17th Aug 2017, 5:39 PM edit delete reply
For the slacker part, I think it's cuz he doesn't train with the whole gang, so we don't see him often, but he still trains

For the cocky part, I guess it comes from the start of the manga, where he always saw himself as one of the strongest fighters despite being beaten early in the tournaments
RMK 17th Aug 2017, 8:33 PM edit delete reply
Those are fair points.

For your second point, I don't think that's the case. I noticed Yamcha was quite humble when left to himself and even worried about getting knocked out early in the qualifiers in multiple tournaments. But when people threaten his friends, then he puts on the tough guy act. It's the wolf pack thing.

That's my take on it at least. Thanks for sharing!
Yalashanda 19th Aug 2017, 3:51 AM edit delete reply
While in the first tournament, he doesn't seem cocky, he does in the Baba arc and in the second tournament, claiming that he'll win all the fights by himself, or saying that Tenshinhan is a dead guy
RMK 19th Aug 2017, 9:53 AM edit delete reply
I wanted to research what you said, as it's been awhile since I read the manga and I've been going off of memory.

With Baba, yes, Yamcha says he "may" beat all the opponents when Baba taunts him, but also keeps Goku as a reserve member. So he's playing it smart but also recognizes he's not unbeatable.

With Tenshinhan, that was one of the things I was referring to in my original response. Tenshinhan kept talking trash and threatening them, to which Yamcha threatens back and gives him the finger. It should be noted that he was speaking of Goku, Krillin and himself in this context. Meanwhile in the tournament, we see in Tale 114, Yamcha again recognizes he very well could lose in the preliminaries, and throughout the arc, Krillin and he go back and forth with excitement over the tournament and wonder over Goku's possible power. Tenshinhan keeps poking him with insults and Yamcha fires right back until their fight.

So I do see your point in that he can throw his weight around a bit, but from my perspective, it always seems in response to threats. Furthermore, regarding the Tenshinhan fight, with as much regard and knowledge he seems to have of Roshi as a legendary fighter and teacher prior to studying under him, I think he was especially proud to have completed his training with Roshi and it boosted his confidence quite a bit. He fully expected the Turtle school as a whole to dominate the tournament.

Thanks for your smart response!

He doesn’t throw his weight around. He doesn’t seem cocky in any other arcs. He is NOT cocky

Uh no? He actually does train, he isn’t a slacker

Awesome work, keep doing it.
I'm happy to know that you support my favorite human fighter in the Dragon Ball universe in a way that Akira Toriyama never did.

Did you read The Case Of Being Reincarnated as Yamcha?

I ask this because I would like to know your opinion.

Cheers from Brazil.
RMK 19th Aug 2017, 9:57 AM edit delete reply
Ah yes, I have read it. The art is beautiful but I did not like the story. There are a number of problems with the assumptions the main character makes right at the beginning that make his actions nonsense. There were other reasons I did not like it, but I would rather not go into those right now.

I'm happy you are enjoying Elsewhere. Thank you for your comment.

Thanks for the story. Krillin was always my favorite, but it's good to see any other non Saiyan character not stuck being just background.

Do you watch DBZA by Team Four Star? Cause this Yamcha makes me think of Tien's moment with Semi-Perfect Cell.

This is such an amazing work. I chanced upon this in the comments section after reading Yamcha's Isekai. Really appreciate the alternative narrative on Yamcha and how he is not some loser but truly someone that wants to prove his worth. You're an amazing mangaka and I hope this manga will be seen through to the end!
RMK 17th Sep 2017, 11:13 PM edit delete reply
I've just tried to be as faithful as I can to the original depiction in the original series. Fans have this tendency to latch onto a single idea about a character and use that to define their entire personality. Yamcha is a victim of "Fan canon" going on for decades until everybody believes it.
Dargon Ballz 17th Sep 2017, 6:24 AM edit delete reply
I think it's a valid assumption when you compare him to the other characters who DO dedicate their lives to training, but in that regard, Yamcha is the most 'human' of the bunch, in the sense that he does indeed have a life outside of fighting.

Realistically speaking, Yamcha is already within the realm of superhuman power levels, he may be last among the Z-fighters, but that means he's above the rest of humanity. Imagine just how well he can perform in competitive sports even if he didn't go full power, he'd be sought after by every team around the world, they'd through all their money to get the guy.
RMK 17th Sep 2017, 11:17 PM edit delete reply
I think you make some good points, but I think there's some minor details that make a big difference. Yamcha does indeed have some pursuit outside of training, but the question becomes for how long and how much did it interfere with his training. From what I gather, there were 2 big times where he wasn't heavily training: when he first started dating Bulma and when Goku beat Piccolo at the tournament. In both instances, he was trying to become "civilized" in pursuit of Bulma. Other than that, when you look at all the story arcs and tournaments, he was training under one of the various masters during the entire story gap off camera. So as I think I said to another reader, he went back and forth between fighter hobo and metro boyfriend. Having a quarrelsome girlfriend just made it easier to stay away.

Oh my, that was fun... You really do know how to keep people engaged in a story. Should I believe he would do a Bending Kamehameha/Sokidon to catch him off guard

I love what you did with Yamcha, but from day 1 in the original series he always was pretty much the embodiment en failure.

But a slacker? After Cell died, sure. But before that point he always seemed like he was trying his very best.

He's incredibly cocky for real tho. That we've seen plenty of time.
Guest 28th Dec 2018, 10:08 AM edit delete reply
He isn’t that cocky

Indeed, some fans seem to just want to hate/trash on him for no reason at all. the hate/ridicule he gets is completely undeserved at this point!
